Authoritarianism then and now

Steven Forti (Trento, 1981) is an Italian historian. He earned his Ph.D. in History from the Autonomous University of Barcelona with his dissertation The Weight of the Nation: Nicola Bombacci, Paul Marion, and Óscar Pérez Solís in Interwar Europe (2014), in which he examines the shift toward fascist positions by left-wing politicians during the interwar period. He currently serves as a Full Professor in the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at the UAB. His research focuses on fascism, populism, nationalism, and the far right in the contemporary era, with a special emphasis on comparative and transnational history. His most recent books are Democracias en extinción. El espectro de las autocracias electorales (Akal, 2014) and Extrema derecha 2.0. Qué es y cómo combatirla (Siglo XXI, 2021). He is a member of the Centre d’Estudis sobre Dictadures i Democràcies (CEDID) and of the editorial board of the journals Ayer. Revista de Historia Contemporánea and Spagna Contemporanea. He is currently the local coordinator of the European research project “Analysis of and Responses to Extremist Narratives” (ARENAS), which has received funding from the Horizon Europe program.
