What role does immigration play
in the populist outbreak in Europe?
Mari-Liis Jakobson is Associate Professor of Political Sociology at Tallinn University, Estonia. Her research interests centre around politics of migration and integration and populist and radical right politics. She is currently the Principal Investigator for the project “Breaking Into the Mainstream While Remaining Radical: Sidestreaming Strategies of the Populist Radical Right” (SIDESTREAM) funded by the Estonian Research Council, which explores the appeals of populist radical right parties reach to atypical supporter groups. She is also the Project Leader of the project “Political Inclusion in the Era of Radicalization” (POLINERA), which investigates the political attitudes and behaviour of persons with an immigration background in the context of the rise of the populist radical right. She has published in renowned political science and migration studies journals, including European Political Science, Contemporary Politics, International Migration and Comparative Migration Studies. She is also the co-editor of the book Anxieties of Migration and Integration in Turbulent Times published by Springer (2023).
